TEACH US TO PRAY

Series Overview

"After years of witnessing the remarkable ministry of Jesus—robust theological debates, imaginative storytelling, courageous opposition to religious oppression, healings, the casting out of demons, and awe-inspiring miracles — the disciples found themselves with just one earnest plea for their Rabbi:

“Lord, teach us to pray.” (Luke 11:1)

This simple question reveals a profound truth. Amid their days with Jesus, the disciples discerned that the extraordinary life he lived among people was the byproduct of his extraordinary inner life with God. They longed to experience God in the same intimate way they saw Jesus experiencing his Father.

In our own journey of discipleship, many of us have grappled with prayer — feeling a mix of obligation, apathy, and confusion. Yet, Jesus offers a refreshingly simple response to our complex concerns:

“Whenever you pray, say: Our Father…” (Luke 11:2).

Over the next six weeks, we will open up our understanding of prayer through Jesus' provided framework: The Lord's Prayer. Through our time, we will not only gain insights into prayer but also weekly apply them in a daily prayer practice that deepens our inner life with God and empowers our outer life in the world.

Series Practice

Over this series, we invite you to nurture a daily prayer practice rooted in the Lord's Prayer. To achieve this, each week, as we study and teach on the the next portion of this prayer, we’ll also provide a framework for adding this movement in manageable two-to-five-minute segments. Our hope is that by the series' conclusion, dedicating fifteen to thirty minutes to daily prayer would become an achievable reality for you.

The purpose of this practice isn’t simply so that we pray more often, pray longer, or pray better; it's about cultivating a deeper connection with our Heavenly Father, wholeheartedly receiving the abundant life Jesus graciously offers us, and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live as citizens of the Kingdom.

Toward this end, we’re summarizing the Lord’s Prayer in six movements in six words.

  • Movement One: Adoration

  • Movement 2: Adoration

  • Movement Three: Intercession
