In the story today, Jesus is watching people put money in the offering box.
Do you know what an offering box is?
What did the rich people put in the offering box?
What did the poor widow put in the offering box?
The rich people gave a lot of money and the poor widow gave two small copper coins, or a penny.
Have you seen a penny?
How much is it worth?
Can you buy anything with one penny?
A penny is the smallest amount of money that we have. Many people never use pennies to pay for anything, but in the story, it was the largest gift that was given. Wait, what?? That doesn’t make sense.
Read Mark 12:43-44 again.
What does Jesus tell the disciples about the poor widow?
Jesus said that the widow gave more because she gave EVERYTHING she had. She only had those two coins and she gave them away! She didn’t have anything left. Not to buy a sandwich. Not to buy water. NOTHING!
Can you believe that? It was a very costly gift. That just means it was probably pretty hard to give. The widow must have really trusted that God would take care of her, right? RIGHT!
Sometimes giving or being generous is hard, but God wants us to do it anyway and he promises to help us if we ask him. In the second video, the kids talk about the most generous giver of all.
Who is it?
It’s JESUS! He gave the greatest gift ever, his life! He died to save us from our sins and it wasn’t easy, but he did it because he loves us so much!
He wants us to give our life to live for him even when it’s hard!
