Have you ever heard anyone say that when someone believes in Jesus and becomes a Christian, they are born again?
What on earth does that mean? How can someone be born twice??? We can’t go back to being babies, right?!
Read 2 Corinthians 5:17 again together.
Of course people can’t be born twice, BUT they can become a new creation like it says in 2 Corinthians 5:17.
Have you ever seen a caterpillar turn into a butterfly or at least heard of it?
What happens?
Does the caterpillar get born AGAIN?
Of course the caterpillar doesn’t get born again, right?! But something really, really cool happens! It turns into something NEW.
In 2 Corinthians 5:17, it says the OLD is gone and the NEW is here.
What does this mean?
Think about the caterpillar and the butterfly. Does the butterfly look like the caterpillar anymore?
When someone puts their hope in Jesus, they become a new creation! When God looks at that person, he doesn’t see a sinful person anymore because Jesus died for their sins. When he looks at that person, he sees a beautiful new creation forgiven of sin. He sees a magnificent butterfly!!
So, when someone puts their hope in Jesus, they become a new creation. GREAT! Now what?
Read Romans 12:2.
It says, “do not be conformed this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…” What does that mean??
Think about the caterpillar and the butterfly again. Does the butterfly go back to acting like a caterpillar? What if the butterfly started crawling on the ground like a caterpillar again? That would be crazy, RIGHT??
The caterpillar is TRANSFORMED! That means it looks different and acts different. When people are TRANSFORMED because of God, they shouldn’t go back to to the old ways of sinning. They have to act different!
When people meet them or spend time with them, they should see how they are like Jesus and not like the people who don’t love Jesus.
God TRANSFORMS people. Isn’t that really cool? This week, think about people you know who love Jesus.
Do they act different than people who don’t love Jesus?
What about you? Do you love and follow Jesus? If you do, do you act different than you did before?
